Janey Butler’s eponymous interior practice has become a well-established name within the British design industry. The award winning studio, much like Lusso, has a distinct style of understated elegance which it applies beautifully across the interiors of high-end luxury homes and commercial properties in the UK.

How do you define your style?

I would describe my key interior design style as elegant and contemporary, with a hint of rustic simplicity. In each project, we combine unique design elements which we believe create a relaxed, natural and timeless look that oozes style, design and quality.

Are you heavily influenced by seasonal design trends?

Classing ourselves as timeless by definition means we don’t follow yearly trends, but this doesn’t mean we’re not constantly evolving, improving and looking at new artisans and suppliers to work with on our projects, and that’s why we travel widely every year to bring these to our new projects. Technology and sustainability are constantly evolving and developing, so this is a key area that our team is always following and implementing in our latest projects.

What would your ideal interior design project look like?

Either an existing country home to bring back to life or a modern interpretation of this which I also love creating. These often consists of outbuildings (existing or new) which we transform into wellness suites, with pools, gyms and spas, and large gardens or grounds where we integrate our designs to create an exceptional country home estate.

What’s the most important advice you’d give to someone renovating their home?

Employ the best architect and principal designer that best suits your style as early as possible. After 25 years, we’re still learning and its this experience which is invaluable if you really want to create something special.

Where do you source your inspiration?

Travelling and nature. My husband and I travel across the UK and abroad frequently, and we heavily research every location, and restaurants even, so we can take in as much as possible from our travels. It’s often a small detail that we’ll notice and expand the idea to suit a project and our style to make it unique.

What do you consider the most important factor when it comes to interior design?

Viewing the project as a whole, so that the exterior architecture, landscaping and period/type of house you’re working on works seamlessly as a whole. It is important to us that everything has to look natural, and as if it has always looked that way when completed, never forced.

How do you balance form and function?

Functionality of any item, be it baths, taps, kitchens, flooring or furniture, is the primary consideration and from this we choose aesthetically what works best for any given project.
