One of the firm's most recent projects, Koto House, is situated in the remote and wild Hebridean isle of North Uist. The four-bed prefabricated home embodies a signature aesthetic of minimalist Scandinavian style and slow luxury that allows property owners to embrace a Nordic lifestyle. It’s designed to work with the surrounding landscape to form a sympathetic response to the stunning landforms, views, colours and tones in North Uist. Large glazing maximises natural light and frames scenic views, as well as natural materials that create a sense of affinity with surrounding nature. Our stone products are featured throughout, and blend perfectly with this sustainable home, so here we talk with the Koto Cabins team to find out more about the property.  

Can you tell us a little about Koto Cabins?

Koto delivers architect-designed, energy-neutral modular homes, cabins, and spa elements. We cater to hotels, estates, hospitality businesses and private clients alike. All our prefabricated buildings are produced to the very highest standards and handcrafted with the utmost respect for both our environment and the people we work with.

Where did the inspiration come from when designing Koto Cabins?

Our modular houses, cabins and sculptural small buildings draw inspiration from a perfect combination of Japanese and Scandinavian design and culture. After we returned from living on the shores of Norway’s fjords, we had a deep appreciation of the local aesthetic and environment.

How would you describe the design of Koto Cabins?

Koto designs unique carbon-neutral spaces that are functionally efficient and aesthetically pleasing. Quality, sustainability and lifestyle are at the forefront of each of our designs. With clean lines and floor-to-ceiling glazing, each Koto is designed to create a sense of what we call ‘slow luxury’. For example, a premium space that offers superior comfort and a calming atmosphere, allowing the user to relax and connect with the surrounding landscape.

What was the objective when designing the bathrooms of Koto House?

Central to the choice of materiality and palette used to craft the bathroom designs of Koto House was the aim to create minimalist luxury spaces whilst merging Koto House with its breathtaking North Uist environment. Designed by the Koto Living studio, the bathrooms focus on natural materials and earthy textures to create a connection between the house and the vast nature outside. In matte white, the Lusso Picasso Stone Countertop Basins and Picasso Freestanding Stone Bath provide a beautiful contrast to the dark hues and earth tones featured in the bathrooms.
