Although urban water systems existed across ancient Rome, China and Greece, indoor taps didn’t become a common feature in UK homes until the mid 19th century. The first screw down high pressure water tap was patented in 1845 by Rotherham-based inventor, Edward Chrimes, giving houses access to a leakproof alternative to the ground plug taps that were generally used at that time. 

The mixer tap shortly followed in 1880, created in Canada by Thomas Campbell, and after a century of improvements to household plumbing systems, single faucets that deliver both hot and cold water are now more popular than ever before.
