A fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian interior styles, Japandi is the ultimate east-meets-west aesthetic. Here we highlight the history and key characteristics of the timeless look that prioritises simplicity, tranquillity and craftsmanship.

DESIGN DISCOVERY

Despite modern appearances, the early origins of Japandi can be traced right back to the late 19th century. The style slowly emerged following the opening of Japan’s borders after a 220-year period of shogun-enforced isolation, enabling Scandinavian designers to discover, explore and find inspiration in its rich aesthetic and culture.

Blending together the cosiness of Hygge with the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi - which focuses on how to live a perfectly imperfect life - the look is centred around an appreciation of natural textures and materials, comfort, craftsmanship and balance. Neutral colour palettes, clean lines, uncluttered spaces, and a sense of purpose and order are also key characteristics.

STYLE RESURGENCE

Elements of the look are particularly prevalent throughout Scandinavian modernism around the 1950s, however the amalgamated style has also enjoyed renewed relevance in more recent years.

Online searches for Japandi skyrocketed throughout the pandemic as interior design naturally became much more focused on wellness and serenity, and interest in the aesthetic has continued to increase in line with growing demand for mindfulness and sustainability.

Offering a warmer, earthier take on minimalism, Japandi is now regarded as one of the most influential styles of the decade, favoured by architects, interior designers and homeowners across the world.

TIMELESS SIMPLICITY

To infuse your home with the Japandi aesthetic, start with a base of calming colours such as oatmeal, taupe and stone contrasted with richer accents to create visual interest and warmth. Tactile fibres and materials are also an important component, including smooth stone, sustainable wood, cotton, linen, and rattan.

In terms of furniture, fixtures and fittings, opt for multifunctional pieces that prioritise both form and purpose, and invest in understated designs that are expertly crafted to last a lifetime.

Incorporating traditional Japanese designs such as shoji screens or a soaking tub can also elevate your interior, along with carefully curated accessories such as vintage books, layered blankets, and lush greenery.
